Workshop on Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being of Students

Workshop on Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being of Students
On July 11, 2024, Model Academy, the prestigious school of MIER, organized an insightful workshop for its teachers titled "Ensuring Emotional Well-Being of Students in Schools." The workshop began with a welcome address by Ms. Bharti Balwal, Incharge Training, who expressed gratitude to the distinguished guest, Dr. Romesh Kumar, a renowned expert in mental health and counselling from the Government of J&K.
The workshop provided a platform for attendees to explore the intricacies of maintaining a healthy mind and emotional balance in students. Dr. Romesh Kumar addressed various dimensions of mental health, emphasizing its significance in today’s fast-paced world. He enriched the discussion with valuable insights on emotional regulation and its impact on overall well-being.
The program offered a holistic approach to mental well-being, focusing on stress management techniques. Teachers practiced mindfulness exercises, including meditation and deep breathing, and received practical tips for incorporating these practices into daily routines. Emphasis was placed on the importance of regular exercise and personalized self-care routines as effective stress management tools.
An extensive overview of common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders was presented, with real-life examples to enhance relatability. Strategies for recognizing signs and symptoms in oneself and others were shared, fostering a deeper understanding of mental health challenges.
The event encouraged participants to seek professional help when facing mental health issues, providing information on local mental health resources, therapists, support groups, and crisis intervention services. The program aimed to destigmatize mental health by sharing personal stories of individuals overcoming challenges, promoting open conversations, and emphasizing the importance of treating mental health conditions as medical issues.
Dr. Romesh highlighted the importance of emotional well-being for school-going children, noting that unaddressed emotional difficulties can hinder academic, personal, and social growth. He stressed that emotionally secure and content children perform better academically and face challenges more effectively. Schools should create a progressive learning environment where academic achievement is linked to good mental well-being, fostering awareness and support for emotional health. By better understanding and supporting students' emotions, schools can contribute to their overall development and welfare, helping students feel more connected and secure.
The Q&A session facilitated open dialogue, allowing participants to ask questions and share personal experiences. Mental health professionals were present to address inquiries, ensuring an informative and supportive environment. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Manju Vali, Academic Incharge Middle Wing, followed by a felicitation ceremony.
